Hard data about the value of a particular degree can be hard to come by. That’s why a new study on Historically Black Colleges and Universities is encouraging. It finds that HBCUs are an under-appreciated vehicle for upward mobility for their overwhelmingly African-American students.

The report was released last week by the United Negro College Fund’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute. The U.S. has 101 accredited HBCUs representing a combined student population that is more than 75% black. The unique contribution of this study is to examine students from the bottom two quintiles of household income ($46,000 or less)—and then find out how many later make it into the third quintile or above. Here’s what the authors say: “On average and across institution type, when it comes to mobility rates HBCUs outperform all other categories and are double the national rate, being the primary post-secondary driver for moving Black Americans from poverty to the middle class.”

What makes this achievement so striking is that HBCUs draw more of their students from the bottom two income quintiles than other colleges do. One way to describe the HBCU difference is this: An HBCU graduate working full-time throughout his career will earn $927,000 more when compared to non-college goers and black students at non-HBCUs.

The contributions of HBCUs to American life are all around us. HBCU alums include the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Vice President Kamala Harris. While HBCUs educate only 10% of all African-American colleges students, HBCU grads account for 80% of black judges, 50% of black doctors and 50% of black lawyers.

HBCUs developed in an era when discrimination, often government sanctioned, prevented many blacks from attending college. But the schools continue to prosper because they deliver a quality education that prepares students of any race to succeed in life. As a ticket to the middle class, they also help keep the American Dream alive.

All Chump did was sign a veto proof bill. The bill was created by black congresswoman, Alma Adams. Both houses passed it bi-partisan. Naturally, Chump takes credit as usual as if he was the one that thought of it.

why didn't past Dems Presidents pass it?
They did. Faux News doesn't tell you that over the course of 7 years, the Obama Administration has invested more than $4 billion in HBCUs. Biden recently signed an excecutive order for HBCUs. There is money in the Build Back Better Bill for HBCUs.

I just want to know why HBCUs and black farmers are treated differently than their white counterparts. Why does it take presidents and congressional bills to get them money?

Still think you need to give Trump and Sen Scott some credit. They did good work. Don't know about the farm issue

I teach at an HBCU, and we've done some incredible work on improving social mobility. It's a true investment in building a strong middle class.

Alma Adams has been a force on that issue for years. I'm glad Trump signed off on that bill, but Biden has also been pushing for additional tuition waivers for HBCU students whose families make less than $125k/year in the Build Back Better bill.

First of all, you tried to insinuate that the democrats did not sign or do anything for the HBCUs. And I just showed you that Obama and Biden did. As far as the link you posted, yes if Tim Scott was the one in the Senate that did what Congresswoman Alma Adams did in the Senate I'll give him credit. I will not give Chump any credit for signing a veto proof bill. Then pumps his chest like if it was his idea.

Yes the farm issue is another aspect of racism that has been going on since reconstruction.

Since you teach at an HBCU you may be able to answer my question. When it comes to funding, why are HBCU's treated differently?

But wait BNI, I thought you said Trump was a racist and white supremist? This sure doesn't sound like something a racist would do.
Unfortunately for you, Biden doesn't even know what HBCU stands for.

Why, the answer to that question is the same as for all of the progressive's questions.

Why do minorities have lower SAT scores? Racism.
Why do minorities have higher incarceration rates? Racism.
Why are there so many drive-by shootings in Chicago? Racism.
And so when it comes to funding, why are HBCU's treated differently? Racism.

One of the biggest issues with most HBCUs (Howard and Spelman may be exceptions) is that they tend to have smaller endowments because of smaller alumni donations, due to lower incomes and lower overall wealth among black people. The smaller endowments are at least partially the result of a historical lack of investment in HBCUs. State legislatures also play a role and many HBCUs don't have as much political clout as flagship universities.

Chump is a racist and white supremacist. Jim Crow is over. Nixon and Reagan's racist buddy, Lee Atwater trained the racist Democrats when they switch to the repubs that they have to he more subtle and abstract. He told them that you can't say the n-word anymore. You have to use code words now. Therefore, Chump is not going to veto a veto proof bill for blacks.

Wouldn’t a WHITE SUPREMACIST go ahead and shut down HBCUs? You are so damn stupid!!

No, you are stupid. You can’t be an overt racist today and make it in politics. They learned how to be more subtle. Although that crazy Colorado chick wasn’t with her racist comments about Congreaswoman Omar. But she is and deserves a lot of flack for it. She should be kicked out of Congress.

Wouldn’t a WHITE SUPREMACIST go ahead and shut down the HBCUs? So what you’re saying is that all politicians are secretly racists? You are the board joke and example 1A of why Democrats get votes. They rely on the stupid like yourself!!

The most closeted racists out there are white democrats (and it's not even debatable). They tell people what to think, what to say, but more importantly how to vote, because white democrats don't think blacks can do any of that for themselves.
