Indinia and Allen still the darling to many somehow...more so to guys outside the program than in it, which makes even less sense. Irrelevant ultimately in that LEO is not what wins games (as evidenced), and, hard to overcome poor or incompetent coaching, but, still very impressive what he has somehow managed to do with respect to drawing talent...to Gloomington and a virtual empty stadium on top of it.Jared Casey picked IU...what is he thinking
Almost a guarantee for significant playing time. I mean they don’t even have a coordinator yet... he had 9 tackles last year and didn’t even play every game.Jared Casey picked IU...what is he thinking
got to give them credit, taking advantage and being aggressive in the portal. Getting transfers from the South, West Coast, and P5 schools. Even if not iu, any team that has a lousy program and play in a small stadium , you have to wonder how they are doing it.Indinia and Allen still the darling to many somehow...more so to guys outside the program than in it, which makes even less sense. I could not be less of a fan, and, that applies likely to most on here as well, but, to your point...they do indeed deserve credit...smoke and mirrors, or, something legit, regardless, what they have managed to do is indeed impressive.got to give them credit, taking advantage and being aggressive in the portal. That is probably true to the larger extent, but, there have some cases of genuine gold as well (Kenneth Walker and others)."The Portal" has has the appearance of fools gold.
Are there short term fixes? OL... role players... the occasional lower-division player who was missed, or has blown up? No doubt.
Any program (and fans) thinking they're going to solve a significant hole in their roster is really rolling the dice.

It may prove to be fool's gold in the case of Indinia, but, they have not just addressed needs, but, they have taken on some guys that were really talented coming out of HS, and, had some success as well in college already...and, at/in some good places in some cases.
OK, let's throw the portal out of the equation, how do they land such a good recruiting class3,000 players entering the portal... many will likely not get the offer they thought they'd get.
Of course, of those who get an offer there will be some, out of 3,000, who will help their new program.
Guys who "were really talented coming out of HS", but don't make it with the school with which they signed... now, they're going to make it somewhere else. The problem is, there's a common denominator... them. Yes, a new venue can provide a new opportunity, but only if something changes, other than the person calling the plays.

I disagree with the author: the portal has not become a joke, it is a joke.
I'd like to see extensive research, and an article, of those who entered the portal but were left out in the cold.
Alas... that wouldn't fit the narrative.

I am in complete agreement with the notion that it is a joke, and, it is only going to become more of one unfortunately...at some point, it will strictly be a case for schools like 'Bama/Georgia to just rectify the few recruiting mistakes that they later discovered they had made. I mean ND just picked up a guy that was an All-American at Northwestern...that is where this is ultimately headed...the rich just getting richer, and, like say, if/when they make a mistake, said mistake moves down and they just replace them with the best from somewhere else instead.3,000 players entering the portal... many will likely not get the offer they thought they'd get.

continuing the conversation, and absolutely NOT disagreeing...I am in complete agreement with the notion that it is a joke, and, it is only going to become more of one unfortunately...at some point, it will strictly be a case for schools like 'Bama/Georgia to just rectify the few recruiting mistakes that they later discovered they had made. That said, I do believe that at the moment (and, it may very well change), that schools like Purdue (and, right now, Indinia) can benefit...and, Indinia seems to be taking advantage of it (or trying to), and, that Purdue has to a lesser extent.
Bigger/broader point though, and, what you touched on here...WAY too many guys making bad decisions, and, in a lot of those cases, those decisions indeed are just an extension of other shortcomings with said guys (think Nojel Eastern as an example on the basketball side of things).
Yeah, we are completely on the same page...small picture AND big picture.continuing the conversation, and absolutely NOT disagreeing...
This reminds me of what used to occur decades ago. Programs like 'Bama would roster ~125 players, most of which would never sniff the field, all in an effort to keep the talent from going elsewhere (allegedly). A roster of 85 changed that, to a large degree.
Either this is a program for STUDENT athletes, or it's not.
If they land in the wrong spot, fine. Give them an "out". They always had that, it just came with the stipulation of sitting out one year. Big deal. This should not ... NOT ... be an amateur free agency ploy. If you want to be a professional, go pro. If you want an education, play for a college/university.
Players can make a bad decision based on The Portal... thinking they're MUCH better than they are.
They're here for an education. I get that some kids are going to "blow up" and have a future in professional athletics. That's great. For the rest, let's get back to them being STUDENT athletes, or get them the h*ll out of college athletics.
I’m OK with the portal. The portal combined with NIL is going to be a fiasco.continuing the conversation, and absolutely NOT disagreeing...

Yeah, if I did not say that initially, could not agree more...it is indeed a fiasco, and, goes more even to the point about this not being about STUDENT athletes.I’m OK with the portal. The portal combined with NIL is going to be a fiasco.
Jackson to NebYeah, if I did not say that initially, could not agree more...it is indeed a fiasco, and, goes more even to the point about this not being about STUDENT athletes.
Funny that Nebraska (almost as much as Indinia) has become a hotbed landing spot suddenly. I admittedly don't get the appeal.Jackson to Neb
It’s usually helped/based on the previous year success on the field. Also having so many guys leaving they are selling early PT. Also having an early signing period will do that many of those kids committed early to IU and at that point many of their other offers will dry up. Let’s see how next year’s class looks. They will have another losing season and probably be looking for a new coach again.OK, let's throw the portal out of the equation, how do they land such a good recruiting class
I am getting more at portal guys though, as, that would seemingly be a similar such consideration...and, in both cases (Nebraska and Indinia), it does not add up...that puzzles me more than a one-off really good recruiting class does. It’s usually based on the previous year success on the field. More about PT. Very few of the guys IU is getting were getting a lot if any PT at their previous schools. Purdue Has succeeded the last 2 years in bringing in a lot of guys that succeeded at Lower levels and have developed into very good players. IU is getting a lot of guys that are leaving where they were at , because of a lack of PT. They also lost a lot of guys that played a lot at IU, but are leaving. Taylor , Penix and others. That’s a sign of something being wrong in the program. It’s funny how fast their BS of how good they were and that they were now a “program” has crashed.I am getting more at portal guys though, as, that would seemingly be a similar such consideration...and, in both cases (Nebraska and Indinia), it does not add up...that puzzles me more than a one-off really good recruiting class does.
I don't disagree, but, to me it would be more alarming to see guys leaving (Robinson at Nebraska...Gonzalez...Penix/Taylor at Indinia), yet, both are picking up some guys from the Portal that apparently have ignored it.More about PT. I mean, guys can find PT at A LOT of places...and, it seems odd that Lincoln and Gloomington are seen by anyone with any legit competence as a good destination regardless of the amount of PT they may get.
I truly believe that there is some, if not a lot, of truth to that...that winning is not important...but, that should in turn be a red flag you would think.Maybe they don't care if they loose as long as they look good doing it.
If you aren’t getting playing time at a power 5 school and still want to play power 5 then you look for the worst and easiest spot to get playing time. That is the dumpster fire that is IU. Wait until some of those 2022 recruits get there , find out how bad it is and then don’t get promised PT. They’ll themselves be in the portal in 2023. 😂I don't disagree, but, to me it would be more alarming to see guys leaving (Robinson at Nebraska...Gonzalez...Penix/Taylor at Indinia), yet, both are picking up some guys from the Portal that apparently have ignored it.

We seemed to find a pretty decent kicker last year, overall you’re exactly right. The line is probably the best opportunity for significant help."The Portal" has has the appearance of fools gold.
