thoughts on Sterling Gibb transferring from Seton Hall. It appears there was a lot of locker room issues, but his numbers are fantastic. He did get suspended for 2 games for a fight and did have an altercation in game with a teammate, which could be concerning. However, I think with RayD as the established team leader and everyone else seeming to fall into line, you could take a flyer on a guy that makes Purdue (on paper) a top20 team.

I think with Painter as our coach I would be surprised if he has grown enough in his coaching ability to want to handle this one...?

I read something similar. People were shocked with the fighting incident b/c he was highly regarded. He didn't get along with Whitehead who is thug/diva. He may actually be the good seed in a toxic situation and his frustrations ran over......... There will be plenty of programs willing to take the risk.

I would take a chance on Gibbs. Where did Jaren Sina end up. He was the other pg from SH that tranfered.

I hope it is true for his sake and if so, he would make an outstanding addition.

From what I've read, I would pursue him. Of course, if Painter learns more that indicates that he would cause chemistry issues, he should surely back off, but I haven't seen enough to say that that would be the case.

His issue with Arc was unfortunate, but his apology seemed sincere. It is concerning that he clearly was frustrated and lost his composure, but he is worth the risk from what I can tell.

I'm kind of 50-50 on Painter and staff pursuing him. He is a guy that can score, distribute, shoot at a pretty good percentage, and is not afraid to make a play or take a big shot when a game is the on the line. However, the last two Seton Hall teams that he was a standout for did not end up being particularly good (i.e. NCAA Tournament teams) and hovered around the .500 mark. I'm not sure that he's a guy that makes his teammates better and then he had two well-known incidents from this past season (fighting with a teammate in a huddle and then punching/slamming an opposing player in the face when going for a loose ball).

So, while I think he could end up being one of the best PG's (skill and talent-wise) that remain available for next season, I don't know if his lack of intangibles (at least with my first impressions) or behavioral concerns make him worth the risk. He's a perfect example of a player that seems as equally risky as he is rewarding.

What are some others' opinions on the prospect of recruiting Gibbs to be Purdue's starting PG for next season?

I'd take a chance, we have 2 schollys open.

If Gibbs didn't pan out or created chemistry issues, would you give the bulk of the minutes at the 1 to Thompson or split them between Thompson, Weatherford, and a few others that might play spot minutes there (Edwards, Mathias, Davis)?

This is sort of OT, but with the other available scholarship, would you offer one to an available PF grad transfer such as Anton Grady from Cleveland State? He's about 6'8, 225 lbs. and would help with Purdue's depth on the frontline. Here's his stats from this past season: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/56903/anton-grady

I'm sure CMP has a backup plan and someone will be working on switching to the point this summer. If we could get another shooter or scorer with that other scholly, that is what I would do with it. I don't think it matters what position.

It seems like our coach has a lot of irons in the fire right now so I assume one of them is going to pan out. With Gibb, some guys do something dumb and get a blemish on their records. I remember Sporty had some things written about him before he came here and he was no problem. Some players have nothing bad on their paper records but they are the biggest jerks, just like some people we work with. So my both sides of the fence logic is, "how do you know without knowing the person or knowing the complete scoop?"

I think "taking a chance" just because he is a good player is not wise but if it was just heat of the moment and it was blown out of proportion , then yes, I would want him.
