But not necessarily in this order.

1. Haas has to produce or start V Edwards in place of him. That small line-up seems to work much of the time. He needs to get stronger with the ball and pass better. Does not use his strength. Played much better coming off the bench last year when matched up against their second center. He seems to be afraid to be aggressive and makes too many mistakes. Needs to recognize the double and triple teams quicker
2. Quit those lazy lob passes to the wings. Must have gotten 5-6 of them tipped and stolen tonight. Cannot afford those uncalled for mistakes.
3. C Edwards needs to learn that the Big 10 is different than the non conference walk-overs and that he will eat the ball most of the time when he tries to drive to the basket and shoot. Ate the ball 4-5 times tonight. He is good and will get much better but needs to learn that this is big time basketball.

With all this being said, PU can right the ship and still be a contender for the title. But must work out some problems before they snowball.

Carsen needs to drive the ball. We need someone that can get in the paint like him. He just needs to learn to dish it to CS or IH when he gets in there. 3 or 4 times tonight when he drove, CS was open on the week side because his man doubled on the drive.

So you want to bench our second leading scorer and rebounder and top shot blocker???

In the second half, Haas passed well out of the double team. If anything, Haas should have played in the overtime. Without Haas, we did not control the tip. Without Haas, they had a better physical defensive match up against Caleb in overtime. Without Haas, Minnesota seemed to have a lot more layups.

I do agree that in the second half, since Haas was not in foul trouble, that they should have turned Haas loose to get every offensive and defensive rebound. Haas does appear afraid of getting into foul trouble and he spends a lot of time boxing out his man instead of just going after the basketball. He needs to go wild every so often to realize how good he really is. However, I understand. Refs do not call as many fouls on a quick player being aggressive going for the ball like they do a strong player, especially on the college level.

I agree most with number 1. I want to see haas try to dunk with two hands every time he gets the ball down low.

I don't know where this dainty, up-and-under reverse layup thing came from. He did that twice and neither time that worked.

Another thing he needs to work on is getting better position. This seems unimprovable at this point in his career. But you'd think he'd be a great rebounder at his size.... he's not.

Not all big men are for whatever reason. Plus I wonder if playing alongside Biggie who is a great rebounder has an impact on that somehow? We won't know until next year if so, but it makes me wonder.

But yes, he is a beast, he needs to go strong to the hole.

It's his poor positioning and his slow reaction time that kills his rebounding IMO. I'm starting to agree he's probably a better fit to our offense coming in off the bench and playing 20 minutes or so, unless the matchup with the opponent dictates more. I think our nominal starting 5 should be PJ, CE, DM, VE, and CS.

Agree on this. It seems to me that the college game has also changed where having a beast down low is no longer optimal. I think Painter "gets it" based off of who he is recruiting, but the game is faster now and Haas' style of play isn't ideal anymore. Hence I think that is why we got a center like Haarms coming in.

Coming off the bench might be the best thing for now unless match ups dictate otherwise.

I'm beginning to have some serious concerns with Haas. When I watch him, I get the feeling the game is still fast for him. He gets around those very physical and talented big men and just seems slow. Personally, I'd go small and leave Biggie in with Edwards at 4 until Haas gets up to speed. He's become a liability at both ends far too often.

When you are 15th ranked team playing at home and favored by double digits you should win. A FF team needs to do that. Purdue did not. Bad calls did not decide the game. Manny deserved to win and they did. Purdue blew it. This was a bad loss and it should not have happened.

Purdue needs a high seed in the NCAA. This does not help.

The college game hasn't changed that much. Switch Hammons on this roster for Haas...NOW you have a game changing beast down low.

His stats are so misleading though...he is virtually invisible any time Purdue plays anyone that has someone with size, and especially if said someone has any athleticism.

Haas is simply a big body...and he has a nice stroke for a big guy at the line...he is slow...he is heavy footed...he has poor footwork...he is not a good rebounder...he is hesitant...he does not play strong with the ball in his hands...more than anything, he is incredibly soft...he does not play 7'2" and 300 lbs. at all.

He is a liability on the defensive end...and he just gets in the way on the offensive end...a genuine space eater, but not a productive one more often than not.

Nice kid seemingly...hard working certainly...but, he has regressed this year rather than progressed, and right now, Purdue is a better team more often than not when he is not on the floor unfortunately.

yep, completely correct.

He is either soft, or afraid to initiate contact because of offensive fouls and it shows. Any team with size and athleticism comically shuts him down. He then turns the ball over with reckless abandon.

He needs to be coming in off the bench, playing the 8 or so minutes that Swanigan rests, and maybe another 8 to 10 minutes together with Swanigan for short stretches, and that is it.

Stats not shown:
Haas almost always wins the tip.
Their big men pick up fouls guarding him.
He sets great picks.
On D, a driver sees him between his defender and the basket.
When a player gets the ball down low and Haas is between him and the basket he puts up a hard shot instead of an easy shot.
Haas' size and presence intimidates many many more shots than he blocks.

You are dead wrong that he does not have good footwork and you are dead wrong that he plays soft. You can see he has great footwork on his offensive moves. You can see their big men wear out trying to guard him.

Haas has done a good job stepping out on picks. There have been times when he hasn't; but overall he has done a good job. Haas boxes out ever time and does a great job not letting his opposite get offensive rebounds. Caleb and Vince are quick rebounders and compliment Haas who is a slow rebounder. They get rebounds that would fall to Haas, who has his side of the basket boxed out. I do agree Haas needs improvement getting offensive rebound and the problem is a quick rebounder can push for position and not get caught, whereas Haas will every time. This is why I suggested they turn Haas free at the beginning of the second half if Haas has 1 foul or less. Haas has to develop the footwork of a defensive line using the swim manuever to get past the opponents box outs. This is easy to learn yet the ref will call this initially against Haas for a foul, but repeated performances and they should let it go.

The problem with basketball today is the pro game emphasizes the individual game. However, the college game should still be a team game. Haas gets a lot of press, but he is unappreciated for what he brings to the team game. Yes Haas looks very slow compared to Caleb and Vince, who look very slow compared to Carson and PJ. However, each player has a job to do and Haas is a VERY important cog on this team. Yes Minnesota came out hitting their outside shots and we didn't. Yes, we fell behind and we needed quicker outside defenders. However, in overtime IMO we needed Haas to get the tip and have their big man guard Haas and let Caleb go free with a smaller match up. We didn't, yet I know Painter is smarter than I, so NP.

Yes Haas and young and inexperienced and yes opponents will plan to do things to reduce his effectiveness, but Haas will keep improving. If we expect to be in the final 8, we need Haas.

His best quality lately is that he still draws a good number of fouls to help get us into the bonus fairly quickly each half.

Carsen needs to drive the ball. We need someone that can get in the paint like him. He just needs to learn to dish it to CS or IH when he gets in there. 3 or 4 times tonight when he drove, CS was open on the week side because his man doubled on the drive.

It would be nice if Painter would call (or they just ran) some high pick & rolls and/or iso plays with/for CE.
