The novelty of being #1 for a week was fun and Ivey and his teammates were behind that. Carsen didn’t take them there on his own. Cline was huge, maybe most important player against tennessee, eifert and haarms were very good. Again my point isn’t to crap on Ivey or Edwards, it’s to point out we can win big with role players like Cline, Haarms, Eifert. No one would ever have thought painters most successful team had 0 first round draft picks let alone a top 6 pick, and staters featured a walk-on, 3 players who couldn’t crack the top 100 in their recruiting class, and a guard who couldn’t shoot.
Well in Clines 4 years...
Freshman- Purdue had AJ Hammond, Vince Edwards and Swanigan. Cline averaged 4 points over 35 games in 14 minutes. 3rd place B1G finish. Purdue lost to a Chris Beard lead Arkansas Little Rock in the first round.
Sophomore- Purdue had Swanigan, Haas, Vince Edwards and Carsen Edwards. Cline averaged 5.4 points over 31 games. 1st place B1G finish. Purdue lost in the S16 by 32 to Kansas.
Junior- Purdue had Carsen Edwards, Vince Edwards, Haas and Mathias. Cline averaged 4 points in 37 games. Purdue finished 2nd in the B1G. Lost to a Chris Beard lead Texas Tech.
Senior- Purdue had Carsen Edwards and Cline as the top 2 scorers. Edwards averaged 24ppg that year. Went to the Elite 8. Had the crazy game against Virginia. Edwards averaged 35 during that E8 run. Shot 46% from 3 on 15 attempts per game. Cline did the same as he did in the regular season.
So what do you think got Purdue to the Elite 8? Could it be the fact that Carsen Edwards went on an absolutely insane offensive tear over 4 games that, even as an IU fan, was super fun to watch?
