7th nationally in 3pt %’s and 12th in 3pts made?

Jaden took too many shitty shots in the BTT and NCAAT and Mason and EHJ both picked a bad time to go 0-3 on good looks against St. Pete’s.
You're looking at the entire season. Look at the NCAA tournament...they were 18-60 for 30%. The reason Jaden took shitty shots is because his other teammates, including a "3 point specialist" playing 35 minutes a game wasn't hitting shit the last 3rd of the season. And we expect this team all of a sudden to light it up from outside on a regular basis??? Gimme a break...

I'm sorry brother, I'm not following you. Why is the result of the three games in the tournament more predictive for next year than the entire rest of the season? Sasha and EHJ shot a combined 24% in the tournament, the rest of the team shot 36%. Gillis struggled in that three game stretch as well, going 0-1, 0-1 and 0-3, but got good looks that he normally knocked down.

You're right in that Sasha's shooting was mostly bad down the stretch but I'm honestly not understanding the argument that the team is likely to shoot poorly from deep next year. Deeply disappointing that they shot it poorly in the NCAAT but that seems like a poor predictive measure.

I think there is a shade in this thread, that for many reasons we will have a terrible team next year. I really doubt that is true. Both my up-side position and the down-siders' postion are pure supposition.

The down-siders are based ever so loosely on some sort of extention (and exaggeration) of what happened in only the last game of the season. However, I got to say that Painter's history tends to support the up-siders, but I respect those that are honestly concerned. We also have a couple trolls on here just stirring the pot. They deserve little to no respect.

We won't have a terrible season. But to believe we're just gonna sink 3 pointer after 3 pointer to make up for double teaming Edey and a lack of off the dribble guard scoring is also not realistic.

We made it to the S16 and the season was a failure. I think we can have a S16 season again, but realistically I think we are a slightly better than bubble team. There are people here who think we won’t make the tourney.

Purdue will likely be sitting very firmly on the bubble and that is only if Furst and one guard can make a great leap. Guards will hold Purdue back tremendously. Easily Painters were group of guards he's had on paper. But you don't simply replace a kid that's a top 6 NBA pick with just anyone.

He was a top 6 pick because of his potential and athleticism not what he put on the court for us. He did not play like a top 6 pick against St. Peter’s. I would rather ryan cline than what we got in the tourney from ivey.

I wouldn’t write off Fletcher Loyer. This type of player thrives in painters system and he’s the best painter has ever recruited at the catch and shoot position. And he’s more than just that. I’d go as far as saying he is the most talented at that role since smooge.

Well his potential and the fact he averaged 17/5/3 and shit 36% from, super athletic... Ya know.. the type of player Purdue basically never sees. You should probably cherish what moments he gave you.

You're using one loss as evidence that Ivey didn't play like a lottery pick? Everyone has bad games. I bet I could pick out more games where he played like a top draft pick than you can find games he didn't.

Give me Ivey, Purdue's frontcourt last year, and 2-3 other guards who don't crap the bed in the tournament and can hit a shot and I'll give you a FF.

Ivey was not the problem. It was our talent level at guard after him. From ivey to sasha/hunter is a huge dropoff. Other than moore, carsen, and ivey, there really has just been a complete lack of talent at guard throughout painters tenure. After those 3 I'd take a cline or lewjack, but everybody else has been so 'meh' at guard for us.

I didn’t say that I said he was a sixth pick. And you mean second team all American? He gave us a lot but don’t throw back we lost a top six nba pick, say he was second team all American and all big ten. We won’t get many top 6 picks but he contributed no more than what we got from carsen, Biggie, Robbie, smooge, and jujuan. He won’t be our last all all big ten and chances are we will have another next year.

Fair enough. Painter has had 4 and he will have more, with Edey with the potential for next year. We will for sure miss Ivey but we will have others who will have just as much an impact as he did.

That might be one of the most ignorant takes I've seen. Ivey was an All-American and 1st Team Big Ten. No, he didn't play a great game against St Peters, partly because of Painter's pathetic game plan. But had it not been for him, Purdue wouldn't have escaped the Texas game.

Context man. Responding to someone who says we won’t win because we are losing a sixth round pick. I love Ivey, we won lots of games because of him. I’ve defended him here plenty of times. He deserved to be an all American and had a poor game partly due to being double teamed and a great game plan by thr peacocks and partly due to questionable game planning by Purdue. He played solid vs Texas. My point is we don’t need top 6 picks to win, we can win with guys like Ryan Cline who go into the tourney playing every game lights out like it will be the last game he ever plays (which was the case).

LMAO. We'll never get to the Final Four and win the tourney without players like Ivey. It takes high level guard play to do that. No offense to Ryan Cline (he was a great role player). But there's absolutely no way Purdue makes the Elite 8 without Carsen playing out of his mind. Goodness sakes, you've drank too much Kool aid...

How many of Painter’s All Americans lead their team to the #1 AP ranking? Only one of Painter’s All Americans took their team further in the tournament.

The novelty of being #1 for a week was fun and Ivey and his teammates were behind that. Carsen didn’t take them there on his own. Cline was huge, maybe most important player against tennessee, eifert and haarms were very good. Again my point isn’t to crap on Ivey or Edwards, it’s to point out we can win big with role players like Cline, Haarms, Eifert. No one would ever have thought painters most successful team had 0 first round draft picks let alone a top 6 pick, and staters featured a walk-on, 3 players who couldn’t crack the top 100 in their recruiting class, and a guard who couldn’t shoot.

Well in Clines 4 years...
Freshman- Purdue had AJ Hammond, Vince Edwards and Swanigan. Cline averaged 4 points over 35 games in 14 minutes. 3rd place B1G finish. Purdue lost to a Chris Beard lead Arkansas Little Rock in the first round.
Sophomore- Purdue had Swanigan, Haas, Vince Edwards and Carsen Edwards. Cline averaged 5.4 points over 31 games. 1st place B1G finish. Purdue lost in the S16 by 32 to Kansas.
Junior- Purdue had Carsen Edwards, Vince Edwards, Haas and Mathias. Cline averaged 4 points in 37 games. Purdue finished 2nd in the B1G. Lost to a Chris Beard lead Texas Tech.
Senior- Purdue had Carsen Edwards and Cline as the top 2 scorers. Edwards averaged 24ppg that year. Went to the Elite 8. Had the crazy game against Virginia. Edwards averaged 35 during that E8 run. Shot 46% from 3 on 15 attempts per game. Cline did the same as he did in the regular season.
So what do you think got Purdue to the Elite 8? Could it be the fact that Carsen Edwards went on an absolutely insane offensive tear over 4 games that, even as an IU fan, was super fun to watch?

And you're saying you would have rather had Cline, as if Cline was the difference and not Edwards becoming Steph Curry for 4 games.
Where did I say I would rather have Cline over Carsen? I said I would rather have had Cline from his senior year tourney than Ivey in this tournament. Are the peacocks better than Purdue and nova? No they played their hearts out. Let’s not pretend it was all game plan. This is all in the context of my original point, we can win with 3/4 star role players. We don’t need lottery draft picks.

How many all Americans did North Carolina have? How about St. Peter’s how many 4 or 5 stars do you need to make the elite 8? And for crying out loud I didn’t freakin say this team will win a championship I said we could be good enough and expected to sneak into the tourney!

Are you really going to compare North Carolina's roster to Purdue's?

Leaky Black - 4 star
Armando Bacot - 5 star
Caleb Love - 5 star
Puff Johnson - 4 star
RJ Davis - 4 star
Brady Manek - Grad Transfer

And secondarily, when you beat Purdue to make it to the Elite 8, is that really that big of an accomplishment anymore? We have a history of losing to underdogs in the NCAA tournament. VCU, Arkansas Little Rock, etc...

From the outside looking in... Purdue could get pretty lucky with the Big Ten going to be fairly down. Tons of talent leaving the conference. Purdue will be able to win some games because of Edey and First likely. But will lose many because the only PGs on the team are Morton and Smith. There won't be a guard on the floor who can breakdown a defense like an Ivey or Edwards obviously, but there isn't even a Ronnie Johnson. They'll have to rely on lockouts from the post a lot. Edey is going to need to become a great passer. I'll go out on a limb and say the starters will be Morton, Loyer, Gillis, First and Edey. Gillis is going to get hurt the most bad the guard play as he won't have the spot up shooting attempts he's had the past couple years.

Furst not First. lol

"There is NOTHING INDICATING EDEY is a must starter! Painter likes BERG too, so it will be the two big men battling for the starting position. Unless Painter does what he has with a few players in recent years and gives them the starting position no matter what."

I hope you are joking with this comment above. Edey will be an All American this year. There is no chance he doesn't start. Berg is a clear redshirt candidate.

I love Edey, but we do not know what Painter will do as who will start or not start. Do you know for sure Edey will be an "all american" ?

Zack and TKR can blow up, but the backcourt right now scares me... What makes us think that Newman will blow up scoring wise? Painter gave Newman lots of rope to prove what he can do and he failed miserably and Matt couldn't trust him and ended up playing Sasha way more than he probably should have. I'm cautiously optimistic but they better get 60 points or more from the frontcourt of Gillis, Edey, TKR, Furst and others because the backcourt may be a black hole. And the new backcourt better show that they can get the ball into Edey and others down low without turning the ball over 30 times a game. It may be a long, frustrating upcoming season.

Newman had lots of rope? He got yanked as soon as he screwed up. You must mean Sasha had lots of rope. You can't deny box scores and minutes played, or the fact Newman didn't play for a long stretch. I'm trying to trust Painter, but everybody had questions on Sashas playing time by the end of last season.

I get your point, but on the other hand, that's not a bad result (say top half or in the hunt for a double bye in the BTT) for a "down" year, IMHO. Let's see how the next three years play out. When your top-4 players minutes-wise leave, it's what would be expected unless you're Kentucky, Kansas, or Duke, maybe add one or two among a select few that doesn't include PurdS

We do know Painter will start Edey. That’s not debatable.
We will see.

I believe Kaufman will be the big surprise this year! I look to him to be our #1 scoring option. I also look for him to finally push our guards out of the 3 spot and use a real forward to play the 3! Kaufman’s offensive skills have never been questioned! And yes our guards are week compared to other BIG 10 teams but those teams are tournament bound teams.

a question is what is considered a bad year or down year for Purdue? I can see 18-20 wins 5-7th place and maybe either bubble ncaa team or an NIT appearance. Is that a down year?
