Not hitting the 'panic' button but the 'concern' button..

It is a fact that in 2 years our team will consist of the above 3 core players plus 2017 recruits (Sophs), 2018 recruits (Frosh), and transfers.

Legit question- have we been 2 years out from the start of a season with only 3 scholarship players in the fold for that season and beyond? For reference at this point last year we had 10 scholarship players (9 not counting Biggie) with eligibility through the 2017-18 season. Two years ago we also had 10 with eligibility through the 2016-17 season.

I suppose the silver lining is no matter who Painter signs for 2017 at this point there will be plenty of playing time to pitch for 2018. That class is going to need to have guys who can play right away.

Ehh, it does seem likely that we will have a few 2017 guys in the low 4 star to 3 star range (90-150 range) based on lack of 2017 recruit interest at this point and who knows in 2018. If that's how it plays out, 2018 could be a bottom feeder type team, but a lot can (hopefully) change in 2 years. If not, surely changes will be made at the top if we see a similar pattern where we make a few tournaments without doing anything significant (maybe 1 S16 and another 1 and done) and then fall to the bottom of the B1G again just like we did 5 years ago after Hummel left.

It is ok to hit the actual panic button...as when you target a class like was done for the '17 class, save/bank scholarships for it in anticipation of needing them so as to have enough scholarships for the guys that are being recruited, and come up empty...and given past recruiting failures...it is more than ok to hit the panic button.

The only time Painter has ever had success was by selling playing time, so I guess that might the silver lining that you allude to...sad that it is what it is in that regard though, as no other legitimate program has that issue.

selling p.t. -
yeah, this is apparently becoming less important to some guys - battey said he wanted to be an impact freshman, but look at msu's classes (let alone a duke, kentucky, kansas). despite knowing they'll have fewer minutes, top recruits can still be sold on self-improvement via team competition, an early more niche role that expands later, ncaa tourney visibility, etc. actually reminds me of t.zeller way back in the day also.

class imbalance -
we've discussed this for awhile now. even more than players themselves, a primary issue continues to be class imbalance.
if we want or need to rely on continuity, leadership, and 4 year players within our program rather than 5 star recruits/early defectors, that makes it an extremely difficult task at our current rates. after the baby boilers and/or hummel's last year, it has been a struggle.

trend of 4-year contributing seniors:
2017 - 0
2016 - 2 (Hammons, Davis)
2015 - 0
2014 - 2 (T.Johnson, Carroll)
2013 - 1 (Byrd, Anthrop with a few minutes per)
2012 - 3 (Hummel, Jackson, Smith)
2011 - 2 (Johnson, Moore)
2010 - 2 (Kramer, Grant, Wohlford had a few minutes senior year)

Outside of Kentucky or Duke, nearly impossible to build a successful program, never mind sustain one, when you back yourself into a corner where you absolutely must hit big with a class due to imbalance, and Painter has done that already and is poised to do it again...way more difficult in a case like his own where he is not able to land premier talent either.

Better hit the Junior college ranks and 5th yr. guys hard!!! Things can change once we get a few 2017 recruits but the way it's looking we better be looking outside the high school ranks. We have a lot to offer for future players in the next few years.

We basically have with the international big men.
Maybe wheeler and some others will be getting some offers as well.

The reason why Eastern would be a great fit for Purdue is he and Carsen Edwards align very well. Eastern would be the primary point on O and Would defend the 2 on D.

I agree, I would love to see Carsen and Eastern on the floor together. I just happen to think, in that scenario, Carsen would be the primary ball handler. I hope we get a chance to find out. This is semi-moot in the motion anyway. BTW, I don't think it's Painter promising PG duties to Eastern.

I agree that the motion makes it possible. Starting Carsen on the wing makes sense from what I've seen because he is such a great triple threat catching the ball off a screen. Eastern can play the Kelsey Barlow role and Carsen can play the E'Twaun Moore role on offense.

Did Carsen throw a ball rack at ryne smith?
