I've seen snippets in other threads when 2017 is discussed that Purdue is after a lot of high profile guys, but not likely to land any of the instate talent.

What is the actual thinking - or is this doom and gloom prognostication accurate?

Seems like there is a ton of talent in this state and I would consider it a gross failure if Painter didn't load up after the recent success we've had (NCAA tourney non-withstanding).

Who would be the most likely to wear the black and gold?

Give me Nojel Eastern (IL), Malik Williams (IN), and Xavier Tillman (MI) and I'd be very happy. It seems Purdue's got a solid shot with each of those players, so it's not necessarily an unreasonable recruiting class. As for the other top talent in-state, its been known for awhile that Purdue has no shot with Paul Scruggs. Kris Wilkes is one hell of a talent that could easily go to one of the blue bloods down south (UK, KU, Duke). Jaren Jackson seems like a wildcard at this point.

As we all know, no one really knows anythng. With that said, Sparty appears to be our chief competition for Eastern and Williams. It does not appear we are in the running for Wilkes, Scruggs or Tilmon (LaLumiere). As said above, Kansas, NC, KY are on them, as is IU on every kid in Indiana that can bounce a ball. Jackson is a wildcard. Gunn is next on most lists. I don't think we've offered him. Take a look at Jordan Goodwin from Illinois. I think he could be a Boiler ... based only on my gut and my heart.

As kids start committing, the domino affect should come into play, although with players this good, a school may take someone even if there are players ahead of him. Then it's the kid's choice whether to go where the competition for his position is going to be tough. Once a few start committing, the positions will start filling-up at some schools. Also, who knows who will commit to the League early. MSU is looking highly one and done for next year, so there will be several spots open. But what if ....

If we can land 1 or 2 of the Top Indiana kids, which is where we need to target. Williams, Scruggs, Wilks, Jackson, make them a priority, we need to keep in state talent in state.

Easier said than done, obviously. Nobody can accurately predict how it will turn out but I, like you, hope we can land a couple of them.

As in a previous post we have no shot at Scruggs so forget him I honestly believe it is a long shot but Wilkes does like Purdue but he can go anywhere he wants I don't know anything about the eastern kid but Malik Williams is a real possibility I wonder about the kid from Castle

Don't forget about Jordan Goodwin and Kyle Young. I would love to get either one of these guys.

From the southside of Indy...Southport area.....Scruggs is a basketball talent for sure, but not real coachable. Probably not a good fit for Purdue.

no, i asked what makes you think we have a good chance at Goodwin.
OH, sorry, As I stated in an earlier post, just my gut and my heart. He seems to like Illinois and I see that as mostly in-state loyalty. We appear to be 2nd based on my conversations. It's early and he would need to feel confident he could beat Mathias and especially Cline for playing time. The people I know feel pretty strongly that many of the others in this class have strong leaning, depending a bit on who commits where first. Everyone is after Wilkes, Scruggs, Williams, and Jackson, so there is some of a waiting game to see who commits where first.

We don't need a 2 badly, but Goodwin is pretty good and certainly different from Mathias/Cline. He could be the beginning of Painter's shift in type of player he recruits.

There are some heroes from the state championship games here.

Does anyone know anything about Reggie Jones from Marion? Supposedly we have some interest there

I agreed with others on here that we should hold off and go all out on the 2017's that we have shown interest in early through out the season. I figured with a nice little run (sweet 16/elite 8) in the tournament that we would catch the eye on some of these highly ranked kids in state and also the ones in our neighboring states that we have made offers to. With the huge let down of being upset in the first round with arguably the most talent we have had in years I'm not so sure now. I would be surprised if we land more than one of these guys now with the way the season ended.

I'm guessing we go 0fer on the four in state studs:
Wilkes
Scruggs
Williams
Jackson

I'm guessing we only get one from this group:
Culver - OH
Eastern - IL
Goodwin - IL
Tillman - MI
Young - OH

Man we could be good on paper talent wise in 2017-2018 with any 3 of these and a senior laden team. Scary good.

Since my son was recruited and played D1, as have a dozen or so of the kid I've coached, not all in basketball, I'll throw out a Reader's Digest version of what they prioritized and based their choices on. With that said, nearly all of them regretted going where they went. Distance from home was a big deal, coaching changes were a big deal, playing time was a big deal, etc. Here is what they were mostly concerned about:
1. How badly does the Coach want him? --- There was a lot of emphasis from guys already playing at different schools to ".... go where you feel the most wanted and you'll be happiest."
2. How did he like the existing teammates?
3. What did the players who hung with him on his visit say about the team culture? Does that fit him?
4. How stable is the head coaching situation?
5. How far away will his girlfriend be where she's going to school.
6. What do his parents, HS coach, and AAU coach think?

None of these guys were on shoe contract teams, hand handlers, or had plans to get to the league. So they were nowhere near a 4-star. The guys at Purdue that I have gotten to know have never mentioned considering how the team did in the Tourney. That doesn't mean it wasn't on their mind, but I don't think it pushed them away if they wanted to come here.

With the group of guys I was around during recruiting, none of them cared how the team did in any couple of games. I am sure the better players are more concerned about that. But I will assure you, if the coach hasn't made them feel wanted/needed, if the players haven't raved about the culture or aren't slobbering with excitement about next year, and if they think they are going into an unknown coaching situation, they won't go there.

He's a senior. Pretty sure hes signed to a small D1 school. Just won state with VJ Blackmon. Seems underrated and another guy from Indiana that will light up the mid major ranks.
