These names are starting to come out and while we have business to take care of before worrying about next season, I thought I might as well start a thread to track them since I figure we'll be taking a look at some players in that market this offseason. Feel free to add to this list as you see them or comment on players on the list.

Today I've seen:

Cullen Neal - New Mexico

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...-mexico-lobos-leaving-coach-father-craig-neal

He is graduating and will have 2 seasons of eligibility remaining and is eligible to play immediately. I was impressed with him when we played New Mexico but it doesn't look like he played very well on the season. Shot only 35% from the field and had more turnovers than assists. Not sure he adds anything to our team.

Malcolm Bernard - Florida A&M

Averaged 14 ppg, 7 rpg, and 4 apg with 2 steals and 3 turnovers per game as well. 42% from the field and only 21% from deep. I don't know much about him. He was the best player on a bad team (8-21). It's not really a position of need for us next year. Again, not sure he would be good enough to take minutes away from Vince/Smotherman/Cline/Mathias/Stephens on the wing.

I sincerely hope he is not good enough to take minutes away from our existing guys .... if he is, we are in trouble!

I've never seen him play but it can be tough to tell. Is he a good player on a bad team with no help or is he a "me" player that just wants to get stats. Again, I have no idea. Just saw his name and knew we had two scholarships still open for next season that I anticipate us looking for at least one grad transfer to fill. I kind of think they'll be looking for a post player to add depth behind Haas/Swanigan more than they will be looking for guards or wings.

You're right .... I'm simply saying that if our guys are not really, really good next year, and I am SURE they will be, they all have great work ethics, then we are in trouble if we need to add anyone at those positions.

I was very impressed with Neal's toughness and court vision when we played the Lobos and would be happy if he ended up at Purdue.

Don't give a scholarship to a guy like Neal. I'm sure Weatherford is just as tough and could shoot 35%. I don't want to add a guy who is inneficient.

Neal was great in the game against the boiler this year. Also his dad is a coach. He's the exact type of player I would have zero problem coming in to help. His dad wouldn't mind him leaving for a coach like Painter either I'm guessing.

Agree with you, but would you feel differently if Stephens left?
I wouldn't, because that's still one scholarship less for the 2017 class than you would have had if you took a 1 year guy. And I would rather have Kendall than Neal to begin with, though I like Neal.

Now Painter may know someone else is leaving, or that we may not get many of our 2017 targets, in which case he goes after Neal.

Look at Neal's numbers from his freshman year, when people weren't threatening to kill him, and tell me you'd take weatherford over that.

LOL, I am not a peegs guy, that's for IU fans, and I am NOT an IU fan. nice try however.
You sure aren't a PU fan, if you were you wouldn't ruin every thread. Just look down through the list and you have commented on everyone and contributed nothing.

Matt Painter was in very early on both Cullen Neal and Bryce Alford the summer before their high school sophomore seasons. Had the Alford/Neal coaching staff not been in place at the time, I have always thought that Neal would have been a Boilermaker straight out of high school. There are many Painter - Neal ties - - one of the reasons that Purdue and New Mexico scheduled each other this past year. For many years the Neal's still owned a home in Fort Wayne as Cullen's mother is a Fort Wayne native and Homestead grad. As soon as Neal announced he was transferring, I thought that Purdue would be his most logical landing spot.

Grad Transfers are a big controversy right now. Look for the rule to be changed and they will disallow this.

I'm not sure why we think we need another PG transfer. PJT has proven this year that he's capable at this level and is the guy capable of taking care of the basketball and hitting an open shot that pretty much everyone has craved at the position. With Edwards coming in, and Weatherford coming off redshirt, the last thing we need is another PG, or even a 2 guard, IMO. We might be better served with another backup big man at either the 4 or the 5. Really, I don't see any need for a transfer for 2016-17 unless you can get a real game changer (like Eron Harris, Suleimon) and I don't think Purdue's going to attract that kind of player.

He's a good player. Played well against Purdue this year...coaches son. Without AJ next year and Biggie playing the 5 some when Haas is in foul trouble or resting, that will allow room for 2 PG type of players to be on the court at the same time when Vince is at the 4...which in college Bball is a good thing as long as they can defend a bit.

Supposedly received death threats due to his fg% being in the 30s. I would expect that from a couple schools to the south of us maybe, but not New Mexico.
Wow. Yeah, if it was my kid, I might encourage him to find a friendlier environment. At least at Purdue, the drama queens in the fanbase only demand that a player get creaned.

Tend to agree with this. Every position returns a player who has demonstrated competence. I would love a 6'10" grad transfer who could give us 20 min a game off the bench and chip in 7 PPG 5 RPG and 2 bpg. I'd also welcome a grad transfer who would be happy playing the role Hill has this year since we don't know how Weatherford or Edwards will be able to handle those responsibilities yet. Other than those backup roles I think it would take a very high level player to displace what we have coming back (assuming no surprises). My guess is that Neal is looking for a bigger role than what the coaches will present to him.

I actually think Jacquil Taylor will be perfectly fine backing up Haas. In fact, it might be more effective because he'll play more like JJ to balance Haas'... uh... Haasness. I expect the motion would run very well with Taylor at the 5, and I'd guess he'll be better than Haas defensively, particularly on the ball screen.

When you exchange Hammons, Davis, and Hill for Taylor, Smotherman, and Weatherford, and add in Edwards, I think we'll be more athletic overall through the entire rotation, even if the starting lineup ends up less so.

What does everyone think of the Hawii bigs or any of their players in general? I know we went after Stefan Jankovic pretty hard. He's a spread 4. But their center is supposedly pretty good. I caught the bad part of the Maryland game so I didn't get a good read. But all their players are eligible immediately to transfer and play wherever.

I'd take Jankovic in a heartbeat but would he want to go somewhere that he wouldn't be guaranteed a starting spot? I think he'd be great to rotate in with Haas and Swanigan at the 4/5 positions next year but I'd still expect Haas and Swanigan to start. I'd think that he would still play 25+ minutes a game in such a rotation because I still don't see Haas playing more than 25 himself (sometimes less because of foul trouble) and Swanigan will need to come out for at least 4-5 minutes each half. If we could sell him on it, I think he'd fit in very well here next year and get all kinds of opportunities in our offense.

I think this would be the first no-brainer in this thread from the Purdue side. One year. Immediately eligible. Fills a hole in our rotation.

I understand this is all complete speck. But if Purdue could sell him. Could Purdue and Stefan get away with playing 8 minutes a game at the 3 away from his natural 4 spot? That way saving more mins for each Haas and Biggie.
