With Louisville getting trounced last night, the path to getting 2 BI0 teams in the CFP became a lot more clear:

1) OSU, Wisconsin, and PSU must win out

2) Washington must lose

OSU wouldn’t make the B10 title game, but in this case, I think that they’d put them in (they’d have a win over Michigan) as well as the true B10 champ, the winner of Wisconsin/PSU.

I hope that it happens since the Big Ten would benefit this year but in my opinion there should absolutely NOT be two teams from the same conference in a 4-team playoff. The committee should have to pick 4 conference champions to fill the spots. This would also make conferences re-think how they crown their champion.

IF we would ever go to 8, that's when I think conferences should be able to send multiple teams with all P5 conferences getting their champion in and I would advocate for at least 1 spot being reserved for a non-P5 school if it attains at least a ranking of a certain level (say top 15 in computer rankings or something) in a specified system. In my opinion, that's where the playoffs should be and that would make the playoffs awesome. Every P5 school would have a path to the playoffs every year and there would at least be an opportunity for non-P5 schools to earn their way in. Every fan would see at least one school from their conference represented.

I disagree on both of your points. I think the committee should pick the 4 best teams, regardless of conference. It's easy to imagine both OSU and Michigan undefeated going into their matchup. In that scenario, why should a 1 loss Michigan team be left out of the playoff when they could easily be the 2nd best team in the country. I'm not in favor of punishing teams just for being in a good conference.

On the second point, I think we've gotten into this argument before, and it's a different issue. I'm not a fan of going to 8 teams... I like how 4 teams creates urgency among the best teams in the country. In an 8 team playoff, Louisville's loss last night is meaningless. So are the last 2 games for Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. Expand the field to 8 and suddenly the best teams are resting players like NFL teams do at the end of their season. "Should JT Barrett start against Michigan?" is not a debate I want to hear.

Just because the public thinks that a certain conference or certain teams are the best in the country doesn't mean they are. About ten years ago when we were just doing #1 vs #2 Michigan and Ohio State did go into their game undefeated and people were clamoring for them to meet again in the championship. Ohio State won and fortunately got matched up against Florida in the national championship and got smoked while Michigan got beat handily by USC. Good thing we didn't listen to some of the pundits that year!

In other words, I believe in letting play on the field decide things to the extent possible. Even if two top 4 teams reside in the same conference, those teams have their chance to get to the championship game by winning their conference. I'm not sure why the loser should play for a national title over another school that actually won their conference on the field of play rather than the court of public opinion.

I think because of this, the NCAA could easily end up at an 8 team playoff. In an 8 team playoff, you are able to have the 5 major conference champions and 3 at large teams. These can then be re-seeding according to the committee. if a non-P5 team makes it in to the top 8, they automatically qualify and only 2 at-large spots are left.
