10th in this weeks coaches poll.

I don't understand the seedings? We are ranked 10th and are a 5 seed? The bigger question is that Michigan State is ranked #2 and they get a 2 seed. Doesn't make since. I think they purposely put west coast teams out west and the same thing for East teams instead of the overall better team.

The seedings reflect the flawed power rankings, which produce feedback-loops that favor teams from conferences with several highly ranked teams and punish teams from other conferences. Iowa State benefits from Oklahoma, Kansas and WVa, whereas B1G teams get hurt just by playing Rutgers. M$U escaped this fate because they scheduled Kansas at home, and beat them, plus wins over Louisville and Providence on the road.

Iowa State did beat both Kansas and Oklahoma - both at home. That's no small accomplishment.

B1G teams can't really complain about the consequence of playing the likes of Rutgers, PSU, and Nebraska. It's not like those schools forced themselves on us. B1G schools voted to invite them. That's why I think a bona fide basketball power (such as Kansas or Syracuse) has to be the target of any future expansion, no matter how much football drives expansion discussions.

Definitely, All B1G teams should be under-seeded by 1, 2, or even 3 seeds in perpetuity, because we admitted PSU in the conference 20 years ago, or Nebraska and Rutgers more recently. Never mind how tough the rest of the conference is, or that Nebraska's basketball program has made huge strides since being an average Big 12 (now 10) program, or that Rutgers has been good at times in the past, or that 2 B1G teams made the final four last year. No, the real test of the conference is that PSU and Nebraska are mediocre and that Rutgers is bad. What about Minnesota? If we kicked them out, would that have earned M$U a #1 seed?

No, the problem is a seriously flawed seeding system run by a Big 12 AD with an axe to grind.

Well, that's not really what I said, BoilerBonz, but ok. You were the one who suggested that Rutgers hurts B1G schools' SOS.

I only added that 3 of the last 4 scools the conference has added have basketball programs that are well below average by power conference standards. It probably didn't help that the conferene- as good as its upper half is- had 2 sub-200 teams this year.

I have seen questionable seeding in the past, but nothing like this year. Top 10 team a 5 seed? The various computerized power rankings don't really explain it IMO. The theory about lining up matchups seems more plausible, but that is a BOGUS way to seed.... Teams working hard for every win they can get end up with a less favorable seed than they deserve because the committee thinks it would be cool for team x to play team y???? I am not that upset about our progression of likely matchups, but the some of the seedlings are a joke. Pretty embarrassing for the committee - might be time to clean that house.

I'd rather be the #5 where we are right now, than the #2 seed in West Virginia's Region and possibly have to play them as the #3, and then UNC to make the F4.

And that's just one example. So, ya know, be careful what you wish for. I like where we are A LOT.

I live in UoL/UK country (Louisville) and all my UK buddies are VERY jealous of our path.

I agree completely that our path is very favorable and my worst nightmare didn't come true (WV in our bracket)!!

That said, I think the seedings were very poorly done this year. While I'm looking forward to the game, there is no way KY/IU should be playing in a round of 32 game. There is no way we should have been a 5 seed. Lastly, Tulsa has no business being in the field.

Really, then what did you mean?

Yes, I said Rutgers is hurting the power ratings of B1G teams this year in basketball, and given the knot heads on the selection committee use these ratings, to a material degree, but not exclusively, then Rutgers hurt the seedings of B1G teams. But I said this in the context of pointing out the flaws of the power ratings, and arguing the committee shouldn't use them because of these flaws.

You, on the other hand, said: "B1G teams can't really complain about the consequence of playing the likes of Rutgers, PSU, and Nebraska. It's not like those schools forced themselves on us. B1G schools voted to invite them." I.e., blame the original B1G members for not selecting new members based on flawed power ratings and the vagaries of the knot heads on the selections committee!

Talk about letting the tail wag the dog!!!

And yes, I reacted with sarcasm.

Fair enough, Bonz. What I meant was we can't really complain about the impact of a program (or programs) that all of the B1G administrations freely welcomed.

I added Nebraska and PSU because I think the issue actually goes deeper than Rutgers. The B1G has added 4 schools in the past quarter century. Only one of them improves the overall basketball profile of the conference. Three of them regularly weaken it.

Hope that clarifies. I'm not really trying to start an argument.

Next round of expansion; Kansas & UCONN...
