Talk of coaching tactics/style aside, can you forsee this team going 9 (sometimes 10) players deep on a regular basis?

V. Edwards
C. Edwards
Mathias
Thompson
Haas
Eastern
Cline
Wheeler
Haarms
Taylor (if he can stay healthy)

Out of conference yes, in conference no Painter seems to tighten rotations 9-10 would be situational for a spark or foul problems I think

CMP will more than likely cut the rotation down to 8 unless situations call for a deeper bench.

Carsen
Vince
Dakota
PJ
Haas
Haarms
Nojel
Cline
Taylor (barring injury/replace with Eifert)

Wheeler
Ewing

I can see 9 get regular minutes. The wild cards are Eastern and Haarms. The other thing that I think forces more people is Haas changes the dynamic enough that some additional guys may fit the non Haas rotation. Basically you got a team effective with Haas and a team effective without Haas - how many guys will play in both? Vince, Carson, Dakota - yes. PJ, Cline - probably. Others - ? Will be interesting to see it evolve. Could be painful as well.

I see eight guys getting core minutes, including Eastern and Harms. Those two are going to play.

Carson, PJ, Dakota, Vince, Isaac, Cline, Eastern, Haarms

Sasha, Ewing, Taylor, Wheeler..yeah I like it.

Could see 9 if Taylor gets healthy though. Big if. Redshirt Sasha? Seems full at his spot.

This year Painter could have enough guys to play in different situations as need be. With that being the case I could see 9 played but getting a variety of minutes depending on the match up.

Talk of coaching tactics aside...

First of all, it's good to see you back here.

I see the 6 core returnees + Eastern taking up all the minutes for the 1-3, 30+ mins at the 4, and around 25 mins at the 5. That leaves somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 mpg left backing up the 4 & 5.

Given their lack of game experience at this level, I don't expect Haarms or Taylor is ready to take all 25 minutes and play consistently good basketball. I guess that means I'm predicting a 9-man rotation.

I can also imagine Wheeler/Grady/Ewing potentially getting playing time along the lines of Bryson at the end of his career here or Basil as a soph. They regularly might not even get in games, but there might be certain nights where Painter uses them for 10+ mins.

It seems like there will be lots of options for Painter this season which means that will give us armchair coaches plenty of opportunities to second guess.

My prediction - Haarms will play a lot. Maybe up to 20 mpg.

I agree, I think he brings too much to the table to leave him off the regular rotation. A big, skilled 7'3 guy who can hit from 15+ feet away. His offense alone will keep him in, as long as he runs the motion with fluidity, he'll get easy buckets from mis matches. His defense will all be gravy, which from what I've seen, is pretty good.

If Taylor can return and play10-15 minutes/game, Purdue should be able to wear down opponents.

I agree to this as well. I think with a healthy Taylor, there's no way you keep him out the lineup. It'll be based on matchups on whoever plays more between the three of Haas, Haarms, and Taylor. Expect to see Haas average a whole lot more minutes, but if we play a team with shooters with a 5 who is very quick and can shoot the 3 comfortably, we have to use Taylor more than the others.

Haarms will likely have a quick leash. One game he will play 3 minutes, the next 20. Super pumped he played well in the scrimmage. If he can give a consistent 12-15 minutes a game we can piece together what is left at the 4 and 5 between Ewing, Taylor (when healthy) and Eifert.

It all depends on Taylor's health. If he's not available, Haarms will play 20 minutes a game. If he is healthy, he'll play 10+mpg, and it'll be situational

And with Haarms being a viable option, I hope the staff can figure a way to allow Taylor to have impact while reducing the risk of injury.

Offense is vastly different with Haarms in versus Haas. Lots of high screens and double screens by Haarms for Carsen/Mathias. That’ll be something CMP goes to if the matchup calls for it and Haarms gets that 20 minutes game.

And pretty good defense might be an upgrade at that position.
