With Purdue dumped into oblivion by the overtime gone wrong, I was ready to immediately leave the arena in disgust and disdain over the ultimate underachievement, just having seen us lose more home games this season (11-5) than the previous four years combined (63-4).

But my 93-to-be dad urged that we stay, and his wisdom worked wonders. We found saving grace as Seeyanevah Day returned to Senior Day and Mackey Magic was duly restored, mostly thanks to the enterprising prodigies in Purdue Sports who delivered the video of videos.

Scott Van Pelt opened it on his ESPN SportsCenter set, surrounded by video board images of the Pride of Purdue, as the anchor lectured the arena audience on the virtues of “Tommy, King of Mackey.” He sandwiched titanic tributes by telecasters Bill Raftery, Clark Kellogg, Dan Dakich, Molly McGrath and Stephen Bardo … all enough to make even Carsen blush.

And, rumor has it, a group named The Who wrote a whole rock opera album in his honor...

“Ever since I was a young boy, I played the golden ball.
“From Ann’ Ho down to Bloo’ton, I must’ve played them all.
“But I ain’t seen nothing like him in any ass-embly hall.
“That King of Mackey sure plays a mean beach ball.”

Thank you for posting this fabulous video. The King of Mackey reigns!

And my goodness...any kind of tribute bestowed by Molly McGrath would make a man graduate magna cum laude.
