you like to spend some time every year. I started looking for a spot to let my bones dry out and kind of came to the conclusion that Sedona might be about as good a place to let that happen as any. We also looked at Prescott Valley and St. George UT.

Just curious, I seem to remember you going into detail about somewhere out there.

Everybody else.... sorry nothin' close to BBall here, just fishin' for some feedback.

Hi...I have been to all 3 and lived in Arizona for 8 years.................

Sedona tops that list.........if you are just going to relax and stimulate your eyes.....

Prescott valley is fun too with the cool little downtown with the courthouse in the middle of town with a brewery and other fun stuff to do.
*Note: Also be sure to stop by a little town called Jerome on the mountainside...fun little stop for a day....

If you are going to play golf...then go to St. George, UT....lots of good golf courses and they have a Casino too.....

If just relaxing I would say Sedona with day trips to Prescott and Jerome............

Have fun.

I would echo 52 with some different info. Prescott is colder in the winter so take that into account. Sedona is very busy in the summers. Bisbee is a small mining town south but it doesn't have much to do. And Tucson gives you a larger city with stuff to do but isn't the giant that Phoenix has become. For tax reasons we picked a small town in the Smokey Mountains.

Sedona is beautiful, but beware of crystal-wielding crazies in search of the vortex!

What criteria are most important for you?

You might add Santa Fe, NM to your list of places to check out.

in the words of Frank Costanza is "Serenity Now" I golf a little but can't see where I'd ever get into it more than two or three times a month. We liked St. George for its proximity to Bryce Canyon and Zion. For sheer, delightful views from every vantage point it was Sedona. Prescott / Prescott Valley offer all the shopping and crap like that which make wifey happy. I've got two kids in college... one of them will finish her undergrad next may and that's when we're looking to probably jump on something at that time so Ii'm trying to gather as much info as I can in between now and that time.

Thanks folks.

I familiarized myself with that brewery last week. I'm not into all the ultra hoppy stuff so I stuck to the Prescott Brewing Pilsner. It was pretty tasty.

Sedona is nice but pricey. Jerome is a good day trip. Interesting past history there. I'd second having a look at Santa Fe. Loved what time I've spent there. Could spend many more days and not run out of things to see/do and just relax.

Lived in Az since 79, I'd echo all of the comments on Sedona and St George. If you looking for Golf and Relaxation then you might look at some of the larger communities in the White mountains closer to the NM / AZ border. (Payson, Show Low and Heber come to mind...) Very slow pace of life there. If you are going year round, Prescott / Prescott Valley is a good compromise of temperature. Flagstaff is great in summer, cold in Winter.

If you like baseball anywhere in the Phoenix area from late Feb. through end of March for Spring Training. Absolutely perfect, temps upper 70's to mid 80's; blue skies; light breeze and about half the major league teams have their spring facilities there. Watch at least one game a day every day if you want. Sedona just a few hours away if you want to take a break.

Even if you don't golf, Payson is a great community to visit.....about 80+ miles north of Scottsdale.
So is it the kind of place where you have to make a 50 mile round trip to grocery shop or are there all the amenities present for every day life?

No, not like that, SB. Would I steer you wrong?

Town of about 15,000 or so.....Safeway and other stores. Not fancy dining but good family restaurants, pizza places, etc. It's a nice drive from Scottsdale through some of the mountains. Could also serve as maybe a stop-off place for a few days or so on the way to other places.

I've been there for the golf.

Town of Payson

Great, thanks and thanks to everybody for their input. I'm leaning towards St. George while keeping a close eye on Prescott and Sedona. We vacationed out that way last week for the purpose of narrowing our list. There were a couple Nevada towns that dropped off the list already. Late fall we're heading back that way and Payson will be on the tour.

You know, I have a number of friends and relatives in the Austin, TX area as well so who knows. First and foremost is ridding ourselves of the "Michiana" winters. All of the above accomplish that.

Thanks again all.

Re: Not Heller but

Bear in mind there is a reason that you leave in April.... Bull head City is close to Furnace Creek in temps during the summer. Hotter than Phoenix usually by 3 to 5 degrees.

Payson is definitely a larger burg than many in Az. It is about 4500 to 5000 ft and is growing. Not growing as fast as Prescott / Prescott Valley. But, Prescott has Whiskey Row, that Payson just doesn't have.

A bit more expensive, but the Palm Springs/La Quinta area is nice for golf and scenery. The Santa Rosa mountain range is gorgeous. San Diego is not bad either.
