Another thread debates the need for a medical school at Purdue. Purdue needs a College of Osteopathic Medicine, not a medical school. Osteopaths are physicians with a focus upon primary care rather than becoming specialists. About 20% of the physicians in America are DOs rather than MDs.

FYI, the most critical shortage of physicians in Indiana is forecast to be in primary care over the next 25-50 years. The need will be especially acute in the many small towns across the state. And "rural medicine" is in keeping with our mission as a Land Grant school.

Michigan State has arguably the best osteopathic school in the nation is a good model for a Purdue College of Osteopathic Medicine. Note that MSU has both a regular "medical school" and a school of osteopathic medicine.

MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine is the #12 ranked primary care school in the nation, tied with Harvard Medical School.

IMHO, that should be our quest.

This is the second time in the past week that I have seen this idea proposed?

From where is this idea coming?

As an aside, this is a custom made thread for DocRon. When this came up on the KHC side of the forum I voiced my opinion but the thread ultimately died.

In other words, paging DocRon.

Hey, we need a MD school. Hit IU where it hurts. If they are going to start an engr program, we might as well do likewise with Med school.
