2024 National Championship Purdue vs. UConn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Keys to the game:
1) Offensive rebounding. Slaughtered us on the boards. Only way we had a chance tonight was to crush them on the boards and they did the reverse!
2) Clingon on Edey. Yes Edey ended up with a lot of points but when it mattered most at the start of the 2nd half, Edey couldn't get the ball to go down for 4 or 5 shots he normally makes. Had one or two looks in the 1st half that he normally puts down as well. Wish he would have gone with the left hand more because Clingon was overplaying him all night on his right hook shot. All credit to Clingon making it tough on him.
3) Talent 1-4. Uconn just had too much. F*ckers.

Flip the first two in Purdue's favor and the game is at least tight coming down the stretch if not a lead for Purdue.

Great year! Nothing but pride in the team! Hopefully this puts Painter in another league in terms of recruiting so that we can get 2 NBA wings/guard to go with an NBA center. Crazy good Uconn team this year.

Its been fun board! Not sure I will be around much this coming season. Hope the team grows next year and keeps building toward a run during Smith's senior year!

Well, I must say, I do love the ones on here that think they are morally superior by saying nothing negative and then just complaining about everyone who does.

Glad Painter made it here, every other year we had a shot there was an injury or a collapse. Really felt like a now or never year and he made it. Happy for him. Hopefully the team plays their best ball in March going forward now that the monkey is gone. Hopefully this is good for recruiting and when we aren’t over signed, good for the portal.

I think flipping the first two is still at best a high single digit coast for UCONN.

Number 3 was the difference

Still don’t understand how they lost to seton hall, and even at Kansas at this point.

We might have had a shot against them early in the season, but we got a super confident well oiled machine at the end
Who knows...bored? Someone spiked their Powerade?

Seton Hall is a good team that got hosed by the committee; they smoked Marquette too. SHU beat UCONN last year also,

they made 6 3s and we made one. lost by 15. once again our guards let us down with poor 3 point shooting

Was it poor 3 pt shooting? Or just great D with the right personnel that allowed so few higher probability looks?

BTW, the "once again" comment is not at all accurate or reflective of the season these kids just had where they had remarkable 3 pt shooting, ending the season close to the top in CBB 3 pt %.

Painter mentioned in his post game presser that the team was told not to force threes as UConn turns those misses into fast breaks. While we prevented all of those fast breaks, we were not even getting open looks to take threes.

When Creighton beat UConn it was because they hit threes and hit a lot of them. For us to win we needed to win the rebounding edge and also shot about 50% from 3.

Stupidest post on the night! We were the 2nd best 3 pt shooting team in the nation this year.
on the year you are correct. last night we were one for seven. their guards shut ours down so i am spot on

not of this season but remember the fdu game last year? we stunk it up from 3 then also

We picked the wrong game to stop shooting 3's.

Totally different animal though, this was a title game against guys that were better than ours. In order to win last night Purdue needed their 5th year guys Jones and Gilles to step up, they along with Loyer combined for 4 points, needed at least 25 combined from them.

one thing Creighton got that we don't is a guy like Trey Alexander, one of the best mid range games and is not just a stand still shooter

Hurley's game plan was simple and it worked perfectly:
Let Edey get his but be physical and make him work: DC did a great job him.
Don't double (or rarely) double the post so you don't leave 3pt shooters open.
Being bigger, stronger, faster at all 3 guard positions allowed them to close out on the 3 but recover if our guard tried to drive and with DC rim protecting.
On O, they put us in PnR, got into the paint for floaters or shooting over our guards. They used those bigger longer guards to crash the offensive glass and won a bunch of 50/50 balls.
Great game plan that worked perfectly.
