2015-2016 Big Ten Overview

We're about at the halfway point of this offseason. I figure that most of the outgoing or incoming transfers and freshman commitments have occurred by now (to go along with the early entrants for the NBA Draft). With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the Big Ten and give a basic outline of what each team has lost, is returning, or is gaining for this upcoming season (with notable stats listed for departures and returnees).

I'll go in alphabetical order and start off with Illinois.

Illinois reminds me a lot of Indiana and Michigan, but not as talented as either. They love their slashers and shooters.

I also think that Beilein is on a different level than Groce as a coach. With equal talent, I'm not sure who is better of Groce and Crean.

Looks like some nice guards available for them.....question is will they play as a team on both sides of the ball or just be the typical Illinois team hunting shots individually.

It's fine. It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way at first.
Just a suggestion. When you post each school, put the school's name in the title of the post so we can find it later witout

This is a team that is getting no respect from preseason prognosticators. Yes, they lost White, but they bring back much of the team that finished tied with us for third place. I don't get why nobody likes Iowa next year? They are still going to be a tough team to play against, and might be better than last year.

Several other schools think that because they got this or that freshman player, they will suddenly junp from a lower half finish to the top 3 in the BIG (I won't mention them by name, lest they come an repeat the same "expert opinions" we have all heard). What they are saying is that they will somehow by-pass this team, amoung others, and place higher. I don't see Iowa going away. Am I missing something? I know they are our most hated rivals, but come on.

I agree about Iowa being an under the radar team. Tho they have the same problem as IU & OSU, they struggle defending. If they can find a go to scorer & defend a little better, they will be in the mix at the end. I believe the B10 is a little bit more open than some would lead you to believe. Conference scheduling will be a huge factor at the end of the race in March.

I agree about Olaseni being an underrated loss for them. Another area he did well in is he got to the FT line the second most (after Aaron White) of anyone on their team last season and made 75% of those attempts. They have a little bit of built-in depth up front (Uthoff, Woodbury, Uhl, we'll see how good Dale Jones is), so it's not a total loss there, but those returnees aren't likely to be as efficient as White and Olaseni were.

Obviously, Maryland seems stacked up to be a very good team, probably the favorite to win the conference. If Stone performs as well as anticipated and can play close to 30 minutes, watch out... That said, losing Wells sure does hurt; he is a rare player who will be tough if not impossible for any of the newcomers to match.

Another factor to watch is Sulaimon. It has to be a little concerning that Coach K dismissed such a talented player for not meeting team standards and Duke certainly didn't miss him after he was gone. Not knowing the details, I think that makes him a bit of a wild card from a team cohesion perspective.

Well done, a very good read and scouting report, I wish the season would arrive soon, a lot to look forward too, again thanks for all the research and

Well done report on Minny. This is a team I can't get my head around. I thought they should have done better last year than they did. They had solid guard play, and played reasonable defense.

It looks like they lost a lot of their best players to graduation so maybe they will see a further performance drop off in 2015/2016 season.

This. I also am a wait and see guy right now on Maryland. I thought they over achieved last year and lost some serious talent. Their season rests on how well they can gel as a team again IMO.

Yep, on paper I guess I would trade Wells for Stone and Sulaimon, but we'll see how the chemistry works.

These reports remind me of the old Street and Smith magazine. It was the one source that gave you info on all the teams, and I used to read every word. In fact, these are more detailed. The only thing missing is the commentary, but I can count on those in later posts.

"So Nebraska's tallest player is going to be 6'8", don't see that working well for them."

They do have a sophomore on scholarship named Jacob Hammond (who is a 6'9/6'10 center) but he played very sparingly as a freshman and put up almost nothing stat-wise, so I didn't include him as a returning regular.

I actually got the writing layout idea from the old Sporting News college basketball magazines (before they merged with Street & Smith about 7 years ago) that used to be released every year. I've been collecting college basketball magazines since I was 8 years old. The Sporting News publications used to show their team previews in this type of manner, but with analysis included.

Very easy to read and get a feel for the returning team. Nice job.

Rutgers looks very thin next year. Thinner than they were this year. Just how in hell did they beat Wisconsin?

Another factor to watch is Sulaimon. It has to be a little concerning that Coach K dismissed such a talented player for not meeting team standards and Duke certainly didn't miss him after he was gone. Not knowing the details, I think that makes him a bit of a wild card from a team cohesion perspective.

I think Suliamon was dismissed for his second accused rape of a student.
